In 1963 Maserati surprised with a four-door sports saloon. The space glider with the sober name "four-door" hides a brute 4.2-litre V8 with 260 hp (alternatively 4.7-litre/ 300 hp) under its elegant dress. Enough for the status as the fastest production saloon in the world.
The second generation remained an optically and technically disastrous interlude from 1974 to 1976. Only the attractive, deTomaso-based Quattroporte III designed by Giugiaro was able to build on old successes from 1979 to 1990.
